A former member of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Sam Onuigbo who represented Ikwuano/Umuahia North and Umuahia South Federal Constituency from 2015 to 2023, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for honouring the late Maj. Gen. Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi during activities marking the 60th anniversary of his assassination.
Onuigbo, who is the President of Globe Legislators, said the commemoration was a significant tribute to the enduring legacy of Nigeria’s first military Head of State, who hailed from the constituency he represented in the National Assembly.
He described Aguiyi-Ironsi as a symbol of patriotism, discipline, integrity and commitment to national unity, noting that his contributions and sacrifices remain an important part of Nigeria’s history.
July 29, 2026, marked 60 years since Aguiyi-Ironsi was assassinated alongside the late Lt. Col. Adekunle Fajuyi during a military counter-coup in Ibadan.
Onuigbo particularly commended President Tinubu, who was represented at the memorial by the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, for recognising the importance of the occasion and for urging Nigerians to renew their commitment to national unity and patriotism.
The former federal lawmaker said President Tinubu had continued to promote national unity through his administration’s policies and engagements, stressing that unity remained essential to the peace, stability and development of the country.
Rt. Hon. Onuigbo enjoined Nigerians to continue to support the Tinubu administration in its efforts to build a more united, peaceful and prosperous Nigeria.
According to Onuigbo, the values associated with Aguiyi-Ironsi’s life and service remains relevant to Nigeria today, adding that the late military leader’s legacy should continue to inspire present and future generations.
He also acknowledged former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, for sending a goodwill message in honour of Aguiyi-Ironsi and commended all those who participated in the 60th anniversary activities.
Onuigbo urged Nigerians, particularly young people, to learn from the country’s history and draw inspiration from the lives and sacrifices of national figures such as Aguiyi-Ironsi and Fajuyi.
He said the 60th anniversary should serve not only as a moment of remembrance but also as an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the ideals of unity, patriotism, discipline, integrity and service to the nation.
The former National Assembly member commended the Abia State Governor, Dr.Alex Chioma Otti for hoisting the anniversary activities in conjunction with the family of late General Ironsi.
The 60th anniversary activities were put together by Governor Otti and the family of late General Aguiyi-Ironsi.
Also in attendance were former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, and former First Lady of Nigeria, Dr Patience Jonathan.
