Barely a month after he presented his Letters of Credence to His Royal Majesty Philippe 1, the Belgian King, Nigerian Ambassador to Belgium, Obinna Chiedu Onowu, today presented Letters of Credence to Ms.Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission
Onowu who is reputed to be one of the most versatile career diplomats in the country had served at the Embassy of Nigeria in The Hague, Netherlands, and later at the Embassy of Nigeria in Bujumbura, Burundi before his appointment as an Ambassador by President Muhammadu Buhari last year.
Ambassador Onowu is expected to bring his wealth of experience as a seasoned diplomat to strengthen the existing cooperation between Nigeria European Commission.
Over the years, European Commission has involved itself in supporting the government of Nigeria to reduce poverty, through improving governance, expanding social equity and maintaining economic growth. The Commission aims at helping Nigeria implement and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
It has funded health and nutrition, sustainable energy and access to electricity, rule of law, governance and democracy as well as support for civil society organisations in Nigeria
