Former member of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Sir Sam Onuigbo, has called on Nigerians to recommit themselves to the ideals of democracy, national unity, and responsible citizenship as the nation marks Democracy Day.
In a message commemorating June 12, Onuigbo described Democracy Day as more than a public holiday, saying it remains one of the most significant milestones in Nigeria’s history and a reminder of the sacrifices made by countless citizens in the struggle for democratic governance.
According to him, democracy in Nigeria was not handed to the people but was won through courage, resilience, and the determination of those who believed that the will of the people should prevail over the ambitions of power.
“The significance of June 12 extends beyond a date on our national calendar. It represents the triumph of democratic aspiration over political uncertainty and stands as a tribute to courage, sacrifice, and the enduring belief that the destiny of a nation must always rest in the hands of its citizens,” he said.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey, Onuigbo paid tribute to those who fought for democratic freedoms and endured hardships to ensure future generations would enjoy the rights of participation, representation, and choice.
He noted that democracy should not be viewed merely as a system of government but as a covenant of responsibility between citizens and the state.
The former lawmaker also stressed Nigeria’s strategic importance in the contemporary global order, stating that the country’s influence, talent, and potential position it as a major player in Africa and beyond.
“We are not a peripheral nation observing the future from a distance. Nigeria’s democratic stability is not only a national asset; it is a statement about who we are and what we are capable of becoming,” he stated.
Onuigbo, however, cautioned that democracy should never be mistaken for an end point, describing it as a continuous pursuit of justice, accountability, inclusion, and national purpose.
He said the true measure of democracy lies not only in periodic elections but also in the daily experiences of citizens, the strength of institutions, and the confidence with which a nation addresses its challenges.
“The task before us is to deepen our democratic culture, strengthen our national cohesion, and ensure that the promise of democracy translates into meaningful progress for all Nigerians,” he said
Despite the nation’s current challenges, Onuigbo expressed confidence in Nigeria’s future, citing the ingenuity of its people, the excellence of its professionals, the determination of its youth, and the resilience that has continued to distinguish the country on the global stage.
He described these qualities as strategic advantages that can enable Nigeria to play a more significant role in shaping Africa’s future and contributing meaningfully to global affairs.
As Nigerians celebrate Democracy Day, Onuigbo urged citizens to honour the sacrifices of past heroes by embracing responsibility, rejecting cynicism, and working collectively towards a stronger and more prosperous nation.
“Nigeria’s democratic journey remains one of the most remarkable stories of perseverance in modern history. Its next chapter must be defined by vision, unity, excellence, and purpose,” he said.
He expressed optimism that Nigerians, working together, can build a nation whose democratic achievements inspire respect, whose institutions command trust, and whose influence extends far beyond its shores.
Onuigbo concluded by wishing Nigerians a happy Democracy Day and praying for continued peace, progress, and divine blessings upon the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
